CASE STUDY 1: RFID Deployment

Bringing RFID Accountability to a Global Art Storage Network

A leading fine art storage and logistics company operating across approximately 40 locations—including 12 international sites—came to SMG with a significant gap in their inventory process. Despite handling high-value collections for museums, galleries, and private collectors worldwide, they had no RFID-based verification system in place. Inventory tracking relied on manual processes, leaving room for discrepancies that could not be easily explained or resolved.

SMG designed and deployed a full RFID implementation program using Zebra Technology hardware across their facility network. Our team handled everything from initial site assessments and tag placement strategy to staff training and system
configuration — ensuring a consistent standard was applied across every location.

The results were immediate. The RFID deployment identified items that had been recorded as delivered but could not be physically located — assets that had essentially fallen off the books. It also surfaced inventory that had gone unaccounted for through routine operational movement. Beyond the recoveries, the technology dramatically accelerated the audit process, reducing the time required to verify large collections and
freeing staff to focus on client service rather than manual counts.

Today the client operates with a verified, RFID-backed inventory record across their full network — a standard that satisfies both internal compliance requirements and the expectations of their institutional and high-net-worth clientele.

Client details are confidential. Results are based on actual SMG deployment.
